NAIS 2008 Annual Conference Presentation

PowerPoint, 26 mb

Since Spring 2006, Grace-St. Luke’s School has been using Daniel Pink’s A Whole New Mind to understand the challenges of the 21st century and how our school must respond. What we have discovered is:

  • Change is a hard sell. It has been a big job to guide our teachers/staff, breaking through resistance that says, “It’s working good for me. Why change?”
  • Change creates anxiety and resistance. Morale can suffer during the process of change.
  • Change reveals a level of “toxicity” that is otherwise kept in check.
  • Change is hard to implement. We have great ideas that we believe in, but making time to incorporate the new is difficult.
  • Change is costly. But, the cost of not changing is deadly.
  • Change is a process.

Using the Six Senses as outlined in Pink’s A Whole New Mind – design, story, symphony, empathy, play, and meaning – we will present a year’s plan for developing “a whole new mind” at your school from top to bottom.

Presenters: Jamie Baker and Tom Beazley, Head of Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School, Memphis, Tennessee

ACDA: Visioning Your Future

PowerPoint, 3 mb

Founded in 1959, the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) is a nonprofit music-education organization whose central purpose is to promote excellence in choral music through performance, composition, publication, research, and teaching. In addition, ACDA strives through arts advocacy to elevate choral music’s position in American society. As the association approaches its 50th anniversary, ACDA leadership is intent on addressing the sustainability and relevance of its organization for the next 50 years. This presentation guides ACDA national, divisional, and state leadership through a framework to develop the right questions as they begin to make decisions about their strategic direction for the future. Leaders worked on these questions in conversational cafes over the course of five hours, harvesting many ideas, new perspectives, and new directions.
